Waiting for kids

The first goat kids are due to arrive a week from tomorrow, however I predicting that Strawberry and Marika will be early and will have triplets. There are actually 5 does due on the 4th and they are all first time moms. So it could be crazy around here.
This is Flower (left) and her sister Marika. Photo was taken mid-Feb.
Strawberry is the "blond" - this photo was taken 2 months ago!

Guess I need to take some photos now....

Working Farm Day

Thanks to everyone that helped with the Working Farm Event yesterday!
There were about 8 friends and interns who showed up to help. The vet was here to draw blood on every goat to be tested for CAE (caprine arthritis encephalitis). I've had various goats tested here and there over the years, but never the entire herd at once. The tests have always been negative, so I'm not concerned there is a problem. I would just like to be certified as a CAE - free farm.
So since we would have to catch every goat I figured it was a good idea to give vaccinations and trim hooves at the same time. We trimmed nearly everyones' hooves except for the very pregnant does. I didn't want to stress them any more than necessary. We will be trimming their hooves after they kid.

I had the intention of taking photos to post here, but was so busy I forgot. I'm so used to Povy being my official photographer that it just slipped my mind.

Eggs!!

Tom helped me move the hay stack from in front of the barn inside yesterday. There is still too much snow to drive the truck to the other stacks. So as we took the tarps off, what should appear but a huge nest of frozen eggs! The young hens had been laying in there. I knew they were messing around inside the tarp, but for some reason didn't think to look for eggs. Further into the stack we found a second nest. A total of 57 eggs!
